About This Project

Fukubukuro (“lucky bag”) is a New Year custom in Japan where stores sell old merchandise from the previous year in mystery bags with deep discounts. Many stores participate, including luxury brands of clothing, shoes, and purses. Consumers purchase these fukubukuro hoping to find luxury items they will like, and more importantly, fit. This piece reflects my fascination of super-saturation of consumerism found within the Japanese culture.
