About This Project

Fukubukuro (“lucky bag”) is a New Year custom in Japan where stores sell old merchandise from the previous year in mystery bags with deep discounts. Many stores participate, including luxury brands of clothing, shoes, and¬†purses. Consumers purchase these fukubukuro¬†hoping to find luxury items they will like, and more importantly, fit. This piece reflects my fascination of super-saturation of consumerism found within the Japanese culture.
